Newtown Creek, Dutchkills, 2017 - Drawing on Paper

$900.00

Original one-of-a-kind charcoal drawing on BFK Reeves paper, 7 by 10 inches; signed and dated with inventory number on recto (2017.16). Inspired by the charcoal drawings of post-impressionist Georges Seurat (1859 - 1891), these drawings are created by both additive (applying charcoal to the surface of paper) and subtractive (erasure with a variety of tools, including mechanical drafting erasers) methods. The subject of the drawing are piling remnants of a 19th century bridge in Maspeth in the Newtown Creek, a 2.5 miles waterway in NYC with a history of heavy industrial use from bone blacking to Exxon-Mobile oil refineries, and the resulting current Superfund site.
